We have found that most people
have the same questions about web site management and hosting. We have
provided the answers to the most frequently asked questions
below. If you do not find the answer you are seeking,
please feel free to email us for additional
information. We want you to be fully informed about
what we can do for your business!
Q:
I want to have a web site. What's my
first step?
A:
The first step
is to choose a web designer that you are comfortable
with. Remember, price does not necessarily reflect
quality. Don't opt for a designer that wants to
'show off' his or her talents. Choose a designer
who puts your needs first.
Q:
What is a domain name?
A:
A domain name
(Web address or URL) is more than your Internet address,
it's your Internet identity, your online brand. It puts
you on the map of today's online world, opening you to
literally millions of users worldwide. When you register
a domain name, you'll join over millions of others who
are reaping the rewards of being online. Your Internet address
will typically be something
like www.yourcompanyname.com.
Q:
How much does a domain name cost?
A:
Prices for domain names vary,
depending on a number of factors, with a typical fee
around $40 per year. It's important to realize
that this will be a recurring cost... domain names are
actually "rented" and must be renewed on an
annual basis. Longer term registrations are
available as well. We can handle this aspect for
you or you may do it yourself. If you choose to
register your own domain name, you will probably pay a
smaller annual registration fee, but you will also have
to handle all the administrative work associated with
the domain name yourself (including configuring
nameserver names and pointers).
Q:
I have a domain name and a web designer. Now what?
A:
There are
several options available here. PCWeb offers the
simplest and easiest solutions for our clients by
providing high quality hosting solutions for your
website, with email boxes, guaranteed uptimes, lots of
bandwidth, etc. There's a yearly fee for this
service -- call us for details.
Q:
I want to host my own site -- can I do that?
A:
Of course!
Your ISP will provide you with a user name and password
for your new domain. You need to give these to
your web designer so that we can 'upload' your site to
its new home. Remember that if you provide your
own hosting, PCWeb cannot offer technical support for
the servers -- your ISP will handle this feature for
you.
Q:
My site is on the Internet. How do I get a higher
ranking in the search engines?
A:
Search engine algorithms change on a continuing basis in
order to keep any one company from monopolizing their
ranking in the results page. However, some factors
remain unchanged. Building a lot of properly constructed web pages and
having dozens of reciprocal links is one secret to
increasing your standings in the search engines. Trade
links with as many other sites as possible in order to
get your site higher in the rankings. As the Internet
robots spider the webs, they will find you faster and
more often.
Q:
I know keywords are important, but how do I choose the
right ones?
A:
Choose
keywords you think people would submit to the search
engines. Ask a co-worker or friends for ideas.
What words would they use to find a company such as
yours? Yes, even include typos and spelling
errors! After you have hosted your site with us a
for a few months, we can review your site statistics
online and tell you for certain what search phrases are
being used to return your site.
Q:
How do I make changes to my new site?
A:
Charges for
changes are billed two different ways: either by the
hour based on a minimum rate, or based on a monthly maintenance fee
(if you are anticipating frequent updates). It is
important to discuss all your needs before we
start your web site so you are well informed.
We hope we
